There is a joke in Europe that goes like this:

A.  What do you call someone that speaks three languages?

B.  Um, trilingual?

A.  Right - what do you call someone that speaks two languages?

B.  Bilingual.

A.  OK - what do you call someone that speaks one language?

B.  Monolingual.

A.  NO - AMERICAN!   

Seriously, fuck person A and fuck this joke.  But nonetheless, knowing certain key words and phrases in the local language can be helpful when traveling in a foreign land.  So each week I will post a new word or phrase that I think is particularly helpful when traveling in Europe.
